Sports Nutrition Coaching for Athletes

with Diabetes

Service Name

Athletes with Type 1 Diabetes face a unique challenge when it comes to fueling for performance. Training, competition intensity, stress hormones, carbohydrate intake, and insulin management all interact to influence blood glucose levels. For many athletes, this can make nutrition feel confusing, unpredictable, or frustrating. However, with the right fueling strategies and planning, athletes with Type 1 Diabetes can train hard, compete confidently, and perform at a high level.

Exercise affects blood glucose differently depending on the type of training, duration, intensity, and timing of insulin and carbohydrate intake. Endurance workouts may increase the risk of low blood glucose, while high-intensity efforts or competition stress can sometimes cause blood sugar to rise. Learning how to fuel appropriately before, during, and after exercise can help athletes maintain more stable glucose levels and better energy throughout training.

As a sports dietitian, I help athletes with Type 1 Diabetes understand how to balance carbohydrates, insulin, and training demands so they can support both performance and long-term health. My goal is to provide practical strategies that help athletes feel more confident with their fueling plan and reduce the stress of managing blood glucose around workouts and sports competitions.

With individualized nutrition guidance, athletes with Type 1 Diabetes can:

• Improve energy during workouts
• Reduce blood sugar highs and lows during training
• Fuel endurance training, practices, and competitions more effectively
• Recover properly after hard training sessions
• Feel more confident managing nutrition alongside diabetes care

Whether you are a competitive runner, endurance athlete, or a youth athlete balancing sports and diabetes, the right nutrition strategies can make a significant difference in both performance and daily energy.
